The Sustainable Planet

Minimizing Our Impact on the World

How can we meet packaging needs now without burdening the planet and future generations? At Bemis, we are actively pursuing green practices that benefit the earth and reduce our carbon footprint.

As part of our Environmental, Economic and Social considerations, our approaches are good not only for the planet, but for people and business as well.

Advocacy and Reporting
We are registered with the Carbon Disclosure Project (www.cdproject.net)* to report our greenhouse gas emissions annually.
We are a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.*
Resource and Energy Efficiency
Our Energy Management Task Force focuses on energy use reduction opportunities throughout the company.
5% of the energy we use in the U.S. and 18% of the energy we use globally is generated from renewable sources, including wind, biomass and other power.
Responsible Manufacturing
We are committed to operating clean, safe, energy-efficient manufacturing facilities, and work to comply with or exceed community, state and federal standards. Environmental considerations are a component in all capital investment decisions to increase operating efficiency, expand manufacturing capabilities or further reduce waste or emissions.
Recovery, Reuse, Reduction of Waste
We resell-as well as recycle-a majority of our in-plant polyethylene trim materials to recover, reprocess and reuse materials.
We are committed to continued product downsizing, where applicable, and to the reduction of manufacturing wastes and emissions through equipment advances, process changes, employee programs and in-line recycling.
We strive to dispose of any remaining waste in the most responsible manner. We also are involved in programs to evaluate disposal options available, such as new markets for reuse of scrap.
Sustainable Material Science
We are a global leader in using material science to develop breakthrough sustainable packaging technologies.
We are exploring new development partnerships, such as our alliance with bioplastics producer Plantic Technologies, to develop packages made from renewably resourced materials.
Stakeholder Partnerships
We form partnerships with our customers to create opportunities for sustainable packaging solutions, including:
  • Generating less waste by downgauging packaging to use less material
  • Reducing the environmental impact of packaging by light-weighting to replace heavier materials such as paperboard with stronger, lighter materials
  • Decreasing transportation costs and emissions by right-sizing packaging to make it lighter and less bulky to ship.
  • Replacing PVC-a chlorine-based material-with PET
  • Optimizing materials for improved cube/space efficiencies
